I sat on the couch in the May’s living room. I had only been there for fifteen minutes, but it felt more like an hour. Fifteen minute before, Patrick had led me inside his house, where his wife, Hannah, started fussing over me. I accepted a glass of water, but nothing else. Now she and Patrick were in the kitchen, discussing what to do with me. Hell, I didn’t know what to do with me.
I couldn’t remember anything about myself. Not my name, my birthday, or even my favorite color. Although, based on my clothes, I was leaning towards black.
I heard a door open and close upstairs. A few seconds later, a girl about my age (whatever it was) bounded down the stairs, her blonde ponytail bouncing. She paused for a second when she saw me, then bounced over and flopped next to me on the couch.
“I don’t know who you are,” she said, “but I bet you’ll want to know me. My name is Piper.”
“Hi, I, um, don’t know my name?” I replied.
Piper frowned. “Is that a question?”
“No, more like a terrible nightmare.”
Piper studied me. “That’s really weird. Do you know why?” All of a sudden, Piper brightened. “Maybe you’re an alien? Or a spy that gave herself amnesia to keep her identity safe.”
I was confused. “Why would a spy give herself amnesia to keep her identity safe?”
“Duh, so she can’t accidentally give herself away,” Piper said, rolling her eyes.
“That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard,” I replied. “Obviously she would have been trained not to give herself away. ”
“But what if there’s a cute guy involved? It would be so hard to not reveal yourself.” I tried to smother a giggle with my hand. “What?” Piper asked. “Why are you-Oh, no! I didn’t mean it that way! I-I meant-” Piper dissolved into giggles. “I meant revealing her identity! You have a dirty mind!”
I was full-out laughing now too.”You’re the one who said it!”
“But I didn’t mean it that way!”
Hannah and Patrick emerged from the kitchen. They looked at me and Piper, then at each other.
“I don’t even want to know,” Patrick said.
“That’s probably for the best,” Hannah replied.
Then they got down to business.
